In the mean time it's a lot harder to stay hungry when you pass by these stores every few minutes. For example, on our first day in Germany, while waiting for a train we went back into town to search for some food we saw from the bus from the airport, and found one of these ubiquitous stores. Then we walked back to the train station to eat it. We found a train station bench inside and settled down to eat some great foccacia, only to discover we were less than 10 feet from another bakery (over half of stations have one, it turns out).

a loaf of bread on every table, and bakery on every block
Germans must really like bread and other baked goods. It's rare to see a block without a bakery. Sometimes you'll see 2 or 3! Perhaps it's my German heritage speaking, but the bread here is great. We've really been enjoying a partly whole-wheat bread filled to busting with seeds of all types, called weltmeister brot. I'm sure I'll be trying to make some of this when we get home.
