Central Berlin

Today we visited the city center, where most of the "famous" Berlin buildings are- the Berliner Dome, the Brandenburg Gate, the TV Tower. We got off the bus at Brandenburg Gate and then walked along this tree lined pedestrian walkway. Not much really happened- it was like: see a pretty building, snap some pictures, read about it in the guidebook, rinse and repeat. We ended our tour with a building designed by the architect/engineer I.M. Pei. The building itself houses the German History museum, but Alan and I both agreed that we were more interested in the architecture than in the stuff inside. Some of the museums, including this one, are free on Thursday afternoon so we might go in anyway.

It was a beautiful day although the
amount of body heat generated by the crush of tourists on the bus back almost made us pass out. When we got back to the neighborhood where we are staying we braved a real (non-Aldi) grocery store in search of bread crumbs and handy wipes. We struck out on both counts, so we are now hungry with dirty hands. Just kidding- we made do with croutons and the handy wipes are for when we're out on the town. Most restrooms here cost money, so we find ourselves at a loss for being able to wash our hands before we eat. At this point it is near impossible to refrain from pointing out to Alan that I suggested we buy some before we leave and he said "we'll just buy them when we get there". In any case, we are off to the forest when Alan wakes up from his nap.
