En-cow-nter

Yesterday we went for a long hike in the Black Forest. We hiked for many miles, up and down mountains, crossed many streams. Eventually we reached the summit we sought- the Schauensland. We hung out for a few minutes, then turned and headed home by a different route.

As we meandered back down the mountain I was contemplating the joys of a hot shower and some food and the guys were talking about whatever. Suddenly we came around a bend and bumped into a band of roving cows! Now Alan and I are not city kids- we've seen plenty of cows. But these cows had some serious horns which gave us pause. After a few tense moments of sizing up on both sides, the cows began grazing at the side of the road (though one cow in particular continued to give us the hairy eyeball) and we decided that if we got far enough out of their path they might just continue grazing right past us.

We scrambled up onto a random pile of wood at the side of the road (cows don't climb, right?) and prepared to wait. The cows ambled along, careful to keep us in view, but they must have eventually decided that we meant them no harm because they continued on up the road. We dismounted from the woodpile (Alan's dismount was less the graceful) and headed on in the opposite direction.

Eventually, after a few more hours, we got to that shower and a delicious meal. Who knew that beer + sprite = awesome?
